How to get rid of broken batteries?

I had this battery powered clicker for school that's been at the bottom of my backpack for a while now. I finally decided to get rid of it to find that the batteries inside had leaked battery acid inside their little chamber. How am I supposed to get rid of this thing? I know how to recycle batteries but not what to do with these ones or with the clicker that they leaked acid all over. I tried looking it up online but didn't find anything useful. Any help would be great!
